New Play Development

Producing works written by women is inherent to 20%’s stated mission. With this comes the necessity of opportunities for new play development focused on women’s work, which is currently lacking in the theatrical field. Through Snapshots, 20%’s short play festival which provides for performance opportunities for unpublished works by Chicago-area female playwrights; Work Shop which allows for the development of a new work through audience and artist feedback, and the company’s dedication to producing area and world premier works 20% is committed to the labor-intensive process needed to nurture new works of theatre. Through the development of the female voice in theatre, 20% can work towards equal representation on a national level.

"When I'm dressed as a woman, like this, I find I am most concerned with the silky sound of my skirt rustling on the floor ... But when I dress as a man, I simply begin to think."

New Anatomies tells the story of turn-of-the-century, European-born explorer Isabelle Eberhardt, who, casting off the traditional values of her day and age, posed as an Arab man and traveled across Islamic northern Africa.

Against a backdrop of poetry and song, playwright Timberlake Wertenbaker paints an extraordinary picture of this courageous, sharp-tongued woman who died tragically in a flash flood when she was just 27 years old and the divide between the worlds she inhabited.

An ensemble of five women performs roles both male and female.
